With the eyes of the world on COP26, we have been telling our own green story here at c2c for the duration of the conference.
- We’ve given away 1,000 discounted tickets to encourage off-peak travel during the COP26 conference. We’re sorry if you missed out, but the offer has been really popular since we opened it last week.
- If you have registered for one of our discount codes and want to check how to use it and save money, see the full Terms & Conditions at the bottom of this page
- Taking the train is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel – and during COP26 we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first electric trains on the c2c route. All 80 of our current trains are powered by electricity, reducing their carbon emissions versus other types of train and when compared to driving
- Now you can work just how much greener you are being by taking the train! c2c passengers can use the carbon calculator developed by EcoPassenger on behalf of the International Railways Union. For example, one person travelling from Southend to Fenchurch Street reduces their carbon dioxide emissions by up to 74% if they take the train rather than drive a diesel car.
- All our platform and car park lighting have been switched to LEDs. This has helped to reduce our site electricity consumption by 15%. By the end of this year we will have gone further and converted all our external lighting into LEDs. The project will also reduce the amount of waste we produce in future years, as we have to replace lighting less often – plus of course reduce our future costs.
- For more than a decade, we’ve been sorting all the rubbish from our station bins to segregate out everything that can be recycled. This takes the hassle out of recycling for our customers, who never have to worry about using the right bin when they are in a hurry. 85% of the rubbish we collect is recycled, and the remainder is used as energy from waste. This ensures absolutely nothing sent for landfill
- Our trains even recycle their own waste energy to save electricity! Over 25% of the energy we use to power our trains is generated through technology called regenerative braking. This means that whenever a train brakes, the energy that is created is captured, converted back into electricity, and reversed back via the overhead power lines to the National Grid. Our trains have been doing this for the past 15 years, but nowadays many electric cars also recharge their batteries when braking in a similar way.
- We’re installing water bottle refill points to help you cut your plastic use. Our first water bottle refill point has already been installed at Grays, and thanks to our Community Fund over the next six months we’ll be installing another eight – with more to follow as well next year. This can help you reduce your own plastic use, as it’s estimated Londoners could save an estimated 175 plastic bottles every year by switching to using refillable bottles.
