c2c celebrates launch of Better Transport Week

12 June 2023

[12 JUNE] Local train operator c2c is encouraging people to switch to the train this summer as part of Better Transport Week – a national celebration of sustainable transport organised by leading charity the Campaign for Better Transport.

To kick off the launch, which starts on Monday 12 June, c2c’s Managing Director Rob Mullen met with Southend West MP Anna Firth at Chalkwell station to pledge the operator’s support to the campaign, which also includes a ‘Love Your Station’ initiative to give local people a chance to tell the charity why their railway station matters to them.

c2c is one of more than 80 organisations supporting Better Transport Week, including the Department for Transport, local authorities, transport industry, NGOs, businesses and passenger groups.

c2c MD Rob Mullen said: “As one of the greenest ways to travel, rail plays a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and traffic on our roads, contributing to our economy and connecting communities in South East Essex and London.

“I’m delighted to be celebrating sustainable transport through the first ever Better Transport Week and I encourage those living across our route to use the train this summer when visiting the coast or the city,” he added.

Local MP Anna Firth said: “I am delighted to support the fantastic ‘Love Your Station’ initiative devised by the Campaign for Better Transport. So many of us use train stations regularly and they are a key part of our commute and social lives.

“Both Leigh-on-Sea and Chalkwell stations are in brilliant locations and provide us with a quick and easy route to London. I will always support these stations however I can and I hope local residents share the same affection for them that I do,” she said.

Director of Policy and Research for Better Transport and Chalkwell resident, Silviya Barrett, said: “As we mark our 50th anniversary, we are launching the first ever Better Transport Week to shine a light on all the wonderful local transport options we have.

“On Rail Day, I am delighted to celebrate the benefits of train travel with c2c, my local MP and councillors at Chalkwell station, where I commute from every week. As one of the greenest ways to travel, rail plays a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and traffic on our roads, contributing to our economy and connecting communities. Today shows how we are all working together to ensure everyone has access to this excellent service.”

Local people interested in nominating their favourite c2c station could also be in with a chance of winning a £100 rail voucher thanks to the Campaign for Better Transport and its partners at the Community Rail Network.

Simply share a comment, a photo, an artwork or even a poem via this page and the favourite will receive a £100 voucher to use on Britain’s rail network. For more information, visit the Better Transport site here.
